Understand some of the factors leading to "antibiotic anxiety".
Appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the 3 major approaches to determining duration of antimicrobial therapy in the literature.
Envision a means by which different approaches can be combined to optimize future therapies.
Embedded in lecture slides.
Why intensivists are Confused On Appropriate Duration of Antibiotics.
All 3 major methods of determining antibiotic duration have distinct strengths and weaknesses.
1) Fixed duration: limited by available trial data; clinical disconnect (i.e.: patient is better before duration finishes or worse after…); 2) Clinical criteria: symptoms linger past microbial “cure”; results in longer than necessary courses; 3) Biomarkers: conflicting data; may not shorten courses beyond fixed duration
